CASE STUDIES

Below is a small selection of some of my most successful projects.

For Anglo American’s platinum mining division, I partnered up with a corrosion expert to build an online training system, allowing personnel to identify corrosion on equipment.

Result: Fewer injuries and less equipment downtime.

The airline had to remodel their Cape Town branch, which included a self-help kiosk for clients who were in a rush. The client emphasised that clients had to have a positive user experience in the branch, and this included the GUI of the kiosks.

Result: More efficient service and an easy to use booking system.

Media24 is the leading publisher of newspapers and magazines in Africa. I was tasked to produce user metrics and style guides for two supplemental tabloid-sized papers to be included in their flagship newspaper publication.

Result: Circulation went up due to two new younger market segments buying the paper.

Even though I was a full-time employee at NWU for over a decade, some of the projects I enjoyed most were the ones that had nothing to do with my official tasks. Two projects were especially favourites of mine. The first was a desktop game, Ex-man, which I art directed for the NWU’s Serious Gaming Institute. The second project was a user experience evaluation of the new NWU website.

For the latter, I gave a group of 30 students a list of tasks to complete on the NWU website. We hooked the students up to eye-tracking equipment and gave them thirty minutes to complete 10 tasks. The tasks were not random and were in fact the main reasons our data suggested users were visiting the website. We needed to make sure that the users needs were easily met.

Results: Both projects were delivered on time and under budget. The NWU website even won an award for best website.
