Looking back: Business Card Design

Hardly anyone uses business cards anymore, but between 2007 and 2009 I designed around 500 business cards for small mom-and-pop businesses. Most of these were done for new businesses that were capitalizing on the business boom we were experiencing in the little river-town of Parys. Being an hour’s drive away from the greater Johannesburg area meant that thousands of city slickers would descend on Parys over weekends to eat breakfast at one of the numerous coffee shops, followed by antiquing, strolls through galleries, and diving into little shops filled to the brim with various knick-knacks.

I was doing logos and business cards at a flat rate of around $50US. At that price, business was booming and the logos had to get done within a day or two, which meant I couldn’t sit for days to create the perfect logo and card. My modus operandi was to create four rough drafts for the clients and let them choose one design and request three changes. In retrospect, most of the designs were adequate, and yes, there were also a few I cringe at when I look at them now, but there were also a few gems. Below are some of the better ones.
