Daft Punk: Reimagined sleeve art

I was never fond of Daft Punk. As someone who likes rock music and 80s synth I thought their work was just okay. This changed though when I watched Tron: Legacy at the cinema in 2010. Their soundtrack for the film remains to this day one of my favourite albums of all time.

After the Tron: Legacy soundtrack they released Random Access Memories in 2013. The cover art (above), though great, didn’t seem to fit the musical sensibilities that I associated with them at that point. I liked the idea of the helmets and they are an interesting visual, but I wanted something else, so I set about to create my own sleeve design for the album. A CD booklet and inlay didn’t give me the sprawling canvas I wanted. Luckily vinyl had come back and that was the perfect medium for my design, specifically a big gatefold sleeve.

Music is never just an auditory experience for me. When I hear music it usually elicits a visual response in my imagination and I ‘see’ colours and landscapes. I delved into this when I created my version of Random Access Memories. I didn’t deviate from the helmets, nor did I redesign the Daft Punk logo. I did though make it my design. I did attempt to adhere to the previous albums’ understated and simple cover designs, but I thought my version should be a bit more colourful.
